Family Portrait

The women in this photograph all wear pasin skirts made from silk that was most likely woven in Baan Natang village. Posing for a family portrait meant donning one's finest attire with permanence and posterity in mind, and here, silk signifies the skills of the family's females as well as the family's resources. Today, this photo, which was taken over 50 years ago, is prominently displayed in the home of the girl in the striped shirt. Now in her 60s, she continues to weave at a loom her husband crafted for her.
